I Am Thankful ~ contest

Like every year, I have so many things to be thankful for. I have two INCREDIBLE, AWESOME daughters who make me smile daily. I have a super sexy, caring husband who I'm head over heels for. A great family. The most amazing friends a girl could ask for. Health, home...all of those wonderful things that we so often take for granted, but that mean so much. I have a great life and I'm so very thankful, but I have to admit, this year is a little different.
I don't know how many of you know this, but I've been at this writing thing for a long time. When I first started it was writing only adult romance about... seven years ago. It was a long road. I've done the super small press thing. The YAY...I-have-my-first-contract-only-to-have-the-publisher-fall-off-the-face-of-the-Earth thing. LOL.

I've written a book, queried it and got a million rejections. Wrote another book, queried, got a million rejections. Wash, rinse, repeat. It wasn't until the fourth novel I queried with agents that I got one. YAY! I was on my way, right? Wrong. She told me she loved my writing, but didn't think the book would sell (WHAT A BOY WANTS. The whole male POV is a tough sell and Sebastian wasn't likable thing). It went on submission and she was right. It didn't sell. Then she left agenting. I got my second agent, wrote MEASURING UP, it went on submission and it didn't sell either.
Things didn't work out with my second agent (though he was great. It just wasn't a fit) and I almost quit. It would have been sooo much easier than so much rejection. But instead I queried FREEING CARTER. No luck. Again... why was I doing this??? LOL. Because I loved it. I love it and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I love writing. I love giving happily ever afters and that's what I decided to keep doing.

I jumped into self-publishing. Every day I am thankful for that decision. Every. Day.

People have the chance to read my stories. I've met even more incredible friends. Readers touch my life on a daily basis and I can only hope to do the same for them... For you.

Now I have a sidebar full of books that I am proud of! Am repped by the FAB Jane Dystel. I have works in progress. I've sold a YA collaboration to Entangled Publishing as well as three adult books. So yes, this year is a little different. I have SO much to be thankful for. I'm honored that anyone reads my books. I'm thankful for each reader. Each reviewer. I'm thankful I have been able to tell these stories and can't wait to tell more. You guys are seriously awesome. I can't even put it into words, but I want you to know I'm thankful for you.

And to celebrate, I'm going to give away ONE copy of ANY of my print books (winner's choice). BTW... print of CHARADE should be available next week sometime. You can live in the US or not. I'll draw the winner Monday. Just leave a comment to tell me what you're thankful for and your email.

Have a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

  1. I am thankful for my children. They make me laugh and keep me on my toes. My husband for making it so I could stay home with them. And my parents because I couldn't ask for better.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

  2. Wow, I love how your sidebar looks! It's filled with awesomeness! (especially What a Boy Wants lol). I think it's fantastic that as a self-published author, you're having success, and that you've signed a deal with Entangled! That sounds wonderful. I will read whatever you put in front of us readers.

So, what am I thankful for? I am very thankful for all of the amazing self-published authors that are so sweet and so good-natured about being self-published. I am so happy that they enver stopped trying in the book world. I'm thankful for the published authors too! Their books are awesome, and no matter self or traditionally published, I will devour as many books as possible.

That sounds like a cliché answer, after your post and all. I am so thankful for many other things, but this year, especially recently, I am thankful that my area of Maryland did not get hit severely by Hurricane Sandy, and that my family and friends in New York are still alive, and that so many people have reached out to help the people in New York. It is truly inspiring to see people work together.

Thank you for the giveaway! Have a GREAT holiday!

I'm very thankful for my health and the health of my kids & husband. I've had 21 blessed years with the man I love with all my heart and for that I'm blessed! I have three beautiful children who are my world! I've also been very blessed with a group of friends I post with and haven't had this many laughs in years!

  8. I am thankful for the fact that I have so many things to be thankful for that I can't choose one. I feel so very blessed in my life to have so many wonderful people in it and I feel so grateful that I am able to be home with my children every day. Whenever I feel a little bummed or down with stuff in my life, I think about how much worse it could be and I am so happy that I do have so much to be grateful for.
And about your books. I read What a Boy Wants a month ago or so and I have to say I LOVE the guys POV. Whenever I read a book, the part that always hooks me in is seeing how a guy feels about a situation or a feeling. Because when I was younger, I knew how I felt when I was in a relationship but I would always wonder about what the guy felt or thought. It was so great to get his perspective and thoughts. It really made it so much deeper for me.

  14. This is a tough one! I guess that I am most thankful for the hugs and smiles I get from my four daughters daily! They are beautiful girls (inside and out) and the light that they shine into my heart is so bright! A hug, a kiss, an "I love you" can turn even the worst day around (and definitely helps them get out of trouble at times!!!). I can't imagine my life without them so I know that they are what I am most thankful for!

  18. I'm so glad you decided to go with self publishing (people have to be crazy not to love reading your books, your the master of guy POV in my opinion. All your male character's crack me up) Measuring Up is probably my favorite book that you have written so far because I struggle with my weight from medicine I take for seizure control (I have epilepsy) and I loved going through Annabel's journey with her. This year I'm grateful for being three year seizure free!

  24. Im thankful for the amazing and strong family I have. Thanksgiving has always been a big holiday for my family and were a very close family too. Last year was a great Thanksgiving and it was also the last one we shared with my father. In January 2012 my dad passed away unexpected. To go thru that and still be as strong as we are and for us to come together this year & be even stronger is amazing. This holiday is going to be bittersweet for me but as I look around the room & see the smiling faces and the laughing Ill be thankful to be apart of it and be blessed that I was given these amazing people to love me & for me go love them in return.

  51. Beautifully written, Nyrae :)

I am thankful that my high school sweetheart and I have survive some very tough years and are happily celebrating our 20 year anniversary next week.

I am thankful for my 14 year old son whom I adore. He's overcome so many obstacles the last couple of years after being diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome. He is such a joy and warms my heart every day.

I am thankful for my 9 year old spirited son. He is so much fun and I love spending my days watching him grow. He is hysterical and holds my heart every day.

I'm thankful for my friends. They love me just as much as I love them and aren't afraid to tell me when I'm being a p.i.t.a. (Pain in the a$$). Unfortunate for me, Pita is their nickname for me :/

I'm thankful to finally be passionate about something more than I thought possible. Having dyslexia, I've alway hated reading and writing until something just clicked in January when my husband was hospitalized and I had to fill my time with something other than worry. I've read almost 150 books this year which is crazy for me and I'm working on a 4 book series. I also have 4 other stories in mind to write. I can't say that they will ever sell and that's not really my ultimate goal. I just love what I'm doing, love the characters and their stories.

I have to of course include that I'm thankful for my God. For watching out for me everyday and keeping me in his arms even on days when I stray from him.

Sorry so long. I didn't realize how thankful I am. THANK YOU for letting me reflect.

    BTW...you totally rock! ;)

  55. I'm not in the US so not celebrating Thanksgiving BUT I have a lot of things to be thankful for.

I think it goes without saying I'm thankful for my husband of almost 8 years (wow, where's that time gone?!) and our 3 amazing, mischievous, clever boys. They keep me busy as a stay-at-home mum every day but I wouldn't be without them.

I'm thankful for all the talented authors [feel free to include yourself there, Nyrae ;)] that I've discovered this year and super thankful that they had the guts to go down the self-publishing route to get their work out there for everyone to enjoy. The reading world wouldn't be the same without you all.

And lastly I'm thankful for all of the equally-as-book-obsessed friends I've made this year. I don't have many people in my "real" life who love reading just as much as I do [well, with the exception of my mum, but she reads completely different genres!] and to "meet" so many like-minded people has been absolutely fantastic! I had never heard of Goodreads before May of this year and now I'm never off there!

    Reading rocks :)
