Broken Boys (contest)

For me characters are the number one thing that sticks out when I'm thinking about a book I've read or written. I need to connect with people and I'm fascinated about them and the whys and hows of things they do. Of how they feel and how everyone handles situations differently. I love exploring people's emotions and witnessing their journey to their happily ever after.

I'm sure most authors will tell you we love all the people we write, and that is so so true. But if most of the other authors are like me, certain characters are a little more special to them. They own a bigger piece of our hearts and they will always have their home there.

For me, that character is Adrian.

He is broken. Oh so broken. But I believe some of the most beautiful characters usually are broken in one way or another. And I think...or I hope, through those broken cracks in who Adrian is, those beautiful pieces of him shine through for the rest of you to see.

I believe the happily ever after is deeper when it comes after bigger struggle. The hope is brighter and the love more consuming. When I wrote Adrian, and his love story with Laney, they consumed me. I felt him in a way I've never connected with another character I've written. I still feel him like that, and I think that's kind of awesome.

His journey isn't easy but really, a lot of the ones that really matter aren't. The fighting helps make it worthwhile and Adrian has to fight. But he does and I love that about him.

“You’re bleeding,” she says.

It’s just another wound to go with all the rest. “I’ve been bleeding for four years.”

Do you like broken boys? What are your favorite things about them? Who are some of your favorites?

Leave an email with your comment. I'll randomly draw one winner for a swag pack.

  1. Hell yeah do I love broken boys. The most broken characters are the ones who are real. It's why I relished reading Adrian so much. I just have this urge to kiss his pain and suffering away, to fix his destroyed heart, to heal his bleeding wounds.

  2. That picture at the top instantly reminded me of Dia Frampton's song "I Love the Broken Ones." It's such a perfect song for what you're saying in this post and if you listen to it, *that's* why *I* love the broken ones. :))

A few of my favorites are Adrian (like my niece would say, ABSO-TOTES-ALLY), Kayden Owens, and Pax Tate. <3 All the heart flutters!

  3. I do love broken boys. You always want to be that one girl who can fix them. I think my favorite thing about them is that they are never boring!.

  4. Honestly, I think all guys are a little broken in places. Some are just better at hiding it than others. I'm staring at all your boys there on the sidebar, lol, and Colt... yes. Dylan... yup. Bastian even, and Jaden for sure. I see a little broken parts of their hearts in all of them, they just all deal with it differently.

I have my own character who hit me harder than the rest as well. But I'll never tell who! LOL.

  5. I like broken boys. They put my heart through the gutter when reading about them, but it's refreshing from time to time to read about people that seem ever more that real to me.

Thw only one that comes to mind right now (and probably because I'm reading his book) is Dean Holder from Colleen Hoover's Hopeleas series.

  6. I love broken boys. <3 It's sad, but everyone's broken in one way or another. Some are just more broken than others. I find that in books, the more broken a guy is, the more I love them. I so badly want to be the one who makes things okay for them, the one who puts them back together. <3

All five of Lauren Kate's Fallen books. I love the broken boy in Fallen. But I love it even more when he becomes whole again. Check out my blog and enter the give away on Friday.

  8. I love all of your "broken" boys. However I think my favorite is Jaden Sinclair. His story was so touching to me.
My favorite of all your boys is definitely Sebastian. His story is the first of your books I read, and he made me fall in love with your writing style. I am a true and faithful fan.

  9. I love them even if it feels like they're tearing my heart apart. I think I would have to go with Pax Tate from If You Stay by Courtney Cole.

  11. Jaden Sinclair got to me the most because I could relate to a boy like that in our neighborhood. They are in our schools. Some, still in first grade..we often wonder what will become of them. I thought he was one of your most endearing characters because he had to over come a past he didn't even really know.

  13. I do love broken boys!! I think it must have something to do with a woman's desire/need to help people and make a difference. I think that the idea of being the "one" that was able to heal a broken boy is the epitome of romantic. Some of my favorite broken boys are Adrian(he has an amazing way with words too!;P, Kayden (from the Coincidence of...) and of course Christian Grey.

  14. Broken boys are so deep and entertaining. But writers need to know the difference between broken and whining.

  19. Broken boys are definitely better: to love, because they are the most give and the most vulnerable and romantic. You really feel the need to relieve your pain, and it almost does not matter how broken they are. They are genuine (:

  24. I love broken boys. :) I think the problem is knowing when you are the one to be able to fix them or if it's something you have to let them do on their own.

  25. Love reading about broken boys. Always looking out for the ones they love and have a story to tell, can't go wrong with that. Some of my favorite are Will, Holder, Adrian, Colt, Travis, Jaden and Kayden. There are a lot of good ones out there to read about.

  26. In one point of view I completely agree with you, it´s great to read about broken boys, I love them! But sometimes I like to read about boys with any problems, when they´re that easygoing person in the story helping with problems to another girl/person too. :)
    I don´t have one favorite broken boy,cause I can´t pick only one :)

  30. I definitely love the broken boys, it's what makes them so awesome, hearing their story even if it is from someone elses POV. I haven't gotten the chance to read Adrians story yet, but when I can I will and I can not wait!
