For me characters are the number one thing that sticks out when I'm thinking about a book I've read or written. I need to connect with people and I'm fascinated about them and the whys and hows of things they do. Of how they feel and how everyone handles situations differently. I love exploring people's emotions and witnessing their journey to their happily ever after.
I'm sure most authors will tell you we love all the people we write, and that is so so true. But if most of the other authors are like me, certain characters are a little more special to them. They own a bigger piece of our hearts and they will always have their home there.
For me, that character is Adrian.
He is broken. Oh so broken. But I believe some of the most beautiful characters usually are broken in one way or another. And I think...or I hope, through those broken cracks in who Adrian is, those beautiful pieces of him shine through for the rest of you to see.
I believe the happily ever after is deeper when it comes after bigger struggle. The hope is brighter and the love more consuming. When I wrote Adrian, and his love story with Laney, they consumed me. I felt him in a way I've never connected with another character I've written. I still feel him like that, and I think that's kind of awesome.
His journey isn't easy but really, a lot of the ones that really matter aren't. The fighting helps make it worthwhile and Adrian has to fight. But he does and I love that about him.
“You’re bleeding,” she says.
It’s just another wound to go with all the rest. “I’ve been bleeding for four years.”
Do you like broken boys? What are your favorite things about them? Who are some of your favorites?
