When I wrote RUSH last year, I don't think there were any active, gay college sports players who were out. I know there weren't any active college football players who were out. Imagine the fear of being the very first at something like that--the bravery it would take. It's something that weighs heavily on Brandon throughout the book. But yes, that was July 2013…
In January 2014 Conner Mertens, placekicker for Willamette came out.
A week later, Conner's boyfriend and college baseball player, Chandler Whitney came out.
In February 2014, Michael Sam, the best defensive player in his division and NFL hopeful, came out.
In March 2014, college football player Mitch Eby, came out.
And in April Derrick Gordon became the first active, NCAA Division 1 college basketball player to come out.
Because of Brandon and RUSH, I feel a special sort of closeness to these stories and the bravery of the men involved. Soon, everyone will realize that your sexual orientation has nothing to do with how well you play. Though things still need to get better, these stories are proof that progress is being made. That makes for a very happy, Nyrae.
