THE WEIGHT OF DESTINY is one of those books for me.
There are so many pieces of me in this book. Not a character who is a lot like me or anything like that, but things that are very important to me as a person. Most of you know I'm a huge supporter of diversity in books. I've written diversity into most of my novels (FREEING CARTER has a half black/half Japanese love interest. SEARCHING FOR BEAUTIFUL, has a Hispanic love interest and a character with two moms. Cheyenne from CHARADE is Native American, Pris from WHAT A BOY WANTS and WHAT A BOY NEEDS is also Hispanic, and RUSH has a gay couple). THE WEIGHT OF DESTINY is diverse as well. It's the first book in the Misfits series and the whole series will be diverse. The core group of friends has a black female who will be a main character in one of the books. We also have a gay character and a bi character, who will also have a book and there's interracial relationships as well. I think diversity is SO important in novels and I'm so excited to be writing a series full of diverse characters--much like the real world.
Another reason that THE WEIGHT OF DESTINY is so special to me is because in a roundabout way, it has to do with writers and famous authors in history. I call this my Virginia Woolf story because that's where this whole series started--with this random idea about a girl named after Virginia Woolf.
You guys know I'm a huge fan of flawed characters and I'd be lying if I said this series doesn't have quite a few of them. As I've said before, we're all a little flawed and I love exploring that part of people in my books.
I'm also very proud of the friendships in this book. I love books with healthy friendships--people who really care and who you know will always have your back. I think we need more books with those.
So, there you have it. These are a few of the reasons, THE WEIGHT OF DESTINY, and the Misfits series as a whole is sort of my baby. I can't wait to share it with you guys. Not much longer (Nov 18th). In the meantime, don't forget to preorder you copy from Amazon. I've been lucky enough to get some incredible feedback from early readers. I'm so honored when I read these and still pretty shocked they're talking about me :)
